Towers Hospital legacy project

In April 2013 LPT reached an historic landmark with the very last patient appointment in the 140-year history of The Towers Hospital.

The Trust invited people to share their memories, and donate or loan memorabilia from the site to help us create a permant record of the Towers' history. The Towers Legacy Project will combine a physical and online collection and historic record and the personal recollection of patients, service users, families, staff and the community.

Photographs, paintings, among the donations

Scores of people responded, with personal stories, photographs, paintings and even an industrial sewing machine, once used to repair patients' shoes in the Towers cobblers, among the items donated to the project. We heard from a number of former staff, along with the children and grandchildren of former staff, and we heard from patients and service users about their experiences, which was very important to us  to help ensure the project respects the experiences of the people who received care on the site.
The History of The Towers, developed as part of this project, is hosted on Leicestershire County Council's website.
The appeal also gave life to a unique film, recording and engaging viewers in some of the ite's s rich history. The Towers Story (also available on YouTube
was showcased at a special Looking Back, Moving Forward event on the Glenfield Hospital site in Leicester. This event not only marked the closure of the Gypsy Lane site, it was also an opportunity to recognise the progress made in mental health care and celebrate the transition to modern, quality mental health care facilities and services for the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

Your can also view this film of some of the highlights of the Looking Back, Moving Forward event on YouTube.
