The views of patients, carers and relatives are being sought regarding proposed changes to the way mental health services for adults are provided. Adult Mental Health Services are currently developing a new acute care pathway - this is a map, or the steps on a journey an acutely unwell patient may take, and it explains the anticipated care, treatment and medication they are likely to receive in order to meet their individual health needs. An engagement event for patients is taking place on 11 January 2012, 6pm - 7pm at the Involvement Centre, Bradgate Mental Health Unit (Glenfield Hospital site).

The festive period can be a very stressful and challenging time. For some people the extra pressures of worrying about preparations, finances, relationships with family and friends added to everyday worries, can become overwhelming. LPT corporate teams move to new single central base

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust is moving to a new corporate headquarters.
Lakeside House, at Grove Park in Enderby, Leicester - becomes the official LPT corporate headquarters from 1 January 2012. A phased move of around 250 HQ and support staff - which includes the Trust's executive team, corporate administrative support, finance, HR, communications and quality and innovation services - began in November. The LPT executive team transferred to Lakeside House from their base at the former Towers Hospital site on Tuesday, 13 December.

On Friday 9th December 2011 of Beaumont Ward, a newly refurbished and extended adult ward at the Bradgate Mental Health Unit (Glenfield Hospital site)was formally opened by special guest and former inpatient Miss Susan Hack from Melton Mowbray. The newly refurbished £3.7m facility has been completely redesigned and redeveloped to enhance the patient experience, by providing a better therapeutic environment and improved privacy and dignity.

Patients, carers and staff are now enjoying a much improved environment for care following the official opening of a newly refurbished ward on 6th December. Located at the Bennion Centre on the Glenfield Hospital site, the Welford Ward provides facilities for older people with mental health conditions. It has been developed and enhanced to include additional single bedrooms and smaller bays, more en-suite toilet facilities, an improved therapeutic environment and new external spaces. All of which will contribute to improved experiences for patients.

LPT is pleased to announce it has been awarded over £150k of National Lottery funding through Arts Council England to develop a three year pilot study, which will use music and literature to help improve the mental health of young black men. The innovative study called ‘Showcase Smoothie' will help to develop individual talents and use the arts to improve the self-confidence and life skills of primarily young black men with severe and enduring mental ill health - as statistics suggest they are more likely to experience mental health inequalities and greater social exclusion.

NBC News Correspondent Charles Sabine will share his personal story of Huntington's disease (HD) on 21st November 2011 at a national conference focussing on the genetic disorder. The Emmy award winning journalist was diagnosed in 2005, and is one of the speakers at the event organised by the Leicestershire Huntington's Disease Service - part of LPT
Senior community dentist, David White has received a special Service Recognition Award from LPT's Learning Disabilities service in appreciation of the outstanding care and dedication he's provided to people with a learning disability. The award recognises the excellent service both he and his dental team provide and the compassionate and understanding way they care for people with a learning disability.

Local people with a few hours a week to spare are being sought by the Trust to work as volunteers in local community hospitals.

Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT) is taking steps to make sure staff have healthy hands, and is saving money in the process. This month LPT will switch from using latex to non-latex gloves for medical examinations and procedures to reduce the potential for allergies amongst staff and patients. In addition, staff will be given better access to moisturising cream for their hands.

More space to improve privacy and dignity, and a better environment for rehabilitation, are the aims of works to take place on Ward 1 at St Luke's Hospital, Market Harborough.
Work will begin in a few weeks to change the configuration of the ward. Bays will be made larger and contain less beds so that there is more room for patients, staff and the specialist equipment they need.

Patients, staff and carers are now enjoying a much improved environment for care following completion of renovation works on ward 4 at Coalville Community Hospital.
The makeover has included replacement of ceilings, lighting, flooring and bay doors; refurbishment of toilets and bathrooms; installation of a new nurses' station; an upgrade to the security system; and complete redecoration. Ward 3 has also benefited, with an upgrade to security and new signage.

Full Monty and Coronation Street actor Steve Huison has lent his full support to a local mental health event on World Mental Health Day on 10th October at The Y Theatre. Steve will help to co-host a special comedy and music evening to celebrate the launch of Leicester band Refuge's ‘Open Mind' EP, which has been created following a national competition to raise awareness of mental illness

We are pleased to announce that building works are on schedule at the Bradgate Mental Health Unit (at the Glenfield Hospital site) and patients will be moving in to 2 newly rebuilt and refurbished wards in mid-December. The hospital unit is currently being developed into a centre of excellence for inpatient care.

LPT will be marking World Mental Health Day by hosting a special event on Wednesday 3rd October. This free event celebrates the important relationships and partnerships the Trust has developed through community involvement and engagement and working closely with local organisations and community leaders. There will be plenty to do and enjoy at the event, which starts at 10am at the Involvement Centre at the Bradgate Mental Health Unit (Glenfield Hospital site).

The Star Wards Open Day (27 September) offers staff and the people using the services the chance to learn about some of the innovative work taking place nationally and here in Leicestershire to improve ward environments.

Independent quality checks on inpatient facilities managed by Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT) have seen more than a quarter of ratings rise from "good" to "excellent" and all sites scored "good" or "excellent" in every category. Annual Patient Environmental Action Team (PEAT) inspections rate the standard of hospital food, environment and privacy and dignity at all inpatient facilities with 10 or more beds. This year's results reflect higher scores in one or more categories at 12 of the 19 LPT sites inspected.

Staff at Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT) are using a new computer alert system to improve the experience people with learning disabilities have when using LPT's wide range of community and hospital services. The alert system will improve patient experience and safety by automatically flagging up on medical records when someone has a learning disability

Local people are invited to learn more about Personality Disorders at a talk to be held by on 28 September. This evening event will provide a greater understanding of what is actually meant by a Personality Disorder, how it can affect people and their families and the reality behind some of the myths surrounding this health condition.

A senior nurse who leads a specialist psychiatric intensive care unit was honoured for bravery by Leicestershire Constabulary at a special ceremony on 17th August, for helping to bring a patient to safety. LPT has been successful in a bid for new funding to improve the experience of people with mental health problems who attend the Emergency Department at the Leicester Royal Infirmary. £356,000 will be invested in LPT's liaison psychiatry services to increase staffing levels in the team.

The creation of a single point of access (SPA) for adult community health services will ensure that patients get the most appropriate care, quickly, and help LPT to make better use of our resources. Scores of mums, families, health and children's centre staff and ‘peer counsellors' will converge on Bradgate Park on Monday 20 June, to celebrate the health benefits of breastfeeding.

Health improvement staff from Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust have been helping teenage mums from Ashby to look at alcohol from a new perspective - through goggles. The young mums, who meet regularly at Ashby Children's Centre, were asked to don the special "beer" goggles to simulate the effects of alcohol on vision, before being challenged to dress and undress a baby doll.
