Psychological Therapies

What Does Our Service Do?

The specialist psychological therapy services provide a range of psychological interventions for adult service users from the age of 16 upwards. We are part of Adult Services Division and accept referrals from both primary and secondary care. We offer specialist level Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy and Dynamic Psychotherapy as well as a service providing Therapy Service for People with a Personality Disorder (TSPPD). We work closely with our colleagues in the Adult and Families, Young people and Children’s Division catering for those service users with complex difficulties who either require more intensive or specialised treatments.

As well as direct treatments we are committed to the teaching, training and clinical supervision of psychological therapists coming from a range of different mental health professions such as nursing, medical, occupational therapy, social work and applied psychology.

How Does Our Service Work?

Patients referred to the CBT or Dynamic Psychotherapy services will be offered an appointment using the choose and book system. Patients referred to the TSPPD will be offered an opportunity to attend an engagement group where they will receive information about the range of treatment programmes available and help thinking about the best approach for them.

Following either an initial assessment or participation in an engagement group patients will be placed on a waiting list until a suitable vacancy becomes available. The current waiting times will be discussed with them and patients kept up to date about any fluctuations to this.

In an average year we accept over 1,700 referrals, though this has risen year on year.

At any one time we would have around 900 patients in active treatment. Patients may be seen weekly or more frequently in one of the group programmes within the TSPPD or in an intensive treatment group.

Where are we based?

Several of our specialist Psychological Therapies services are moving from the Towers Hospital site (Gipsy Lane, Leicester) and integrating together at a new base at Gwendolen House, a building on the Leicester General Hospital site which is separate from the main hospital. As you may be aware, the Towers Hospital site has been sold for redevelopment, with the proceeds being reinvested in new and improved patient facilities.

Service users will continue to see their usual therapists and receive the same high levels of service at our new base.

Services are moving at different times. This is our timetable:

•           The Cognitive Behavioural Psychotherapy Service – Thursday 21 March.

•           Therapy Services for People with Personality Disorder – Friday 22 March.

•           Dynamic Psychotherapy Service – Tuesday 9 April.

•           Leicester City Open Mind Service – Wednesday 10 April.

The new address for the integrated Psychological Therapies service and Open Mind is:

Gwendolen House
