The Travelling Family Service
What Does Our Service Do?
The Service is provided as an outreach service which can also be accessed directly at a designated base and is available for Travellers of all ages. We visit parents and new babies to assess their health, well-being, growth and development of the baby and give support as needed. We complete developmental assessments of children to insure they are achieving their milestones and if not then refer them to an appropriate service or agency. We see older children at home and give health advice, make referrals or signpost to other agencies as needed. We give immunisations to both children and adults.
The team also visit adults to assist with accessing primary care services such as GPs and Dentists. We also give advice around public health issues, such as smoking, healthy eating, exercise, drug and alcohol issues, general wellbeing and mental health.
We can provide cultural awareness training and act as advocates for both service users and providers.
How Does Our Service Work?
A service user can expect a confidential, non- judgemental service from a team who have a specific awareness and understanding of their cultural needs. As we are an outreach service we have flexibility in visiting arrangements. The service user will be visited at home or at a place convenient to them and the team member.
We will carry out assessments, offer support, advice and advocacy, give immunisations, give treatment, referrals, signposting to appropriate services, and assist with registrations to services such as GPs, Dentists and Opticians. We provide Health Education and promote health services such as the importance of attending screening and other health appointments.
We also respond to Safeguarding issues relating to children and vulnerable adults in a sensitive manner and in accordance with policies.
We make contact with our service users by mobile phones or routine visits to where they are located and all mobile groups will be visited by the team within two- five days of their arrival in our area.
The Team consists of three full time staff including two qualified nurses, one health care assistant and one secretary. We visit Travelling Families in Leicester, Leicestershire & Rutland – which covers a population of between 4-5,000 people.
On average we make approximately 3000 contacts a year.
