About PIER and Early Intervention

  • A specialist service for people aged 14-64, experiencing a first episode of psychosis. We see people early to prevent things getting worse.
  • Since many people suffer a psychotic episode at a young age, it can have a profound impact on their lives interrupting their efforts to gain education, employment, accommodation and achieving ordinary lives and experiences. Over the course of three years, assistance will be offered with overcoming these difficulties.
  • The PIER team aims to step in intensively at this initial stage and is proactive in concentrating efforts much earlier, rather than adopting the traditional “wait and see” approach.
  • The team has developed a community based low stigma approach and offers help for psychological adjustment and recovery, prevention of relapse and support to people and their families.

Philosophy

  • The service philosophy is to assist individuals and their families in coping with the experience of psychosis, promote optimal recovery and reduce the likelihood of relapse of psychosis. The focus is on maintaining & developing community connections through collaboration to help individuals to determine their own goals & direction and identifying the support needed to enable this.

Meet the staff

  • The multi-disciplinary team includes social workers, doctors, psychologists, community nurses, occupational therapists and youth support workers from a variety of backgrounds, providing a good skills mix within the team. All staff members work together to ensure that client's needs are met.
