Speech and Language Service for Families, Young People and Children

What Does Our Service Do?

We are a team of speech and language therapists and support workers who provide services to children and young people across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

We offer a range of services for children and young people who have difficulties with;

  • Speech, language and communication skills
  • Eating, drinking and swallowing skills

The service works closely with families, parents and carers to improve children and young people’s progress in these areas and to ensure that their potential for learning , social and emotional development is reached.

We work in partnership with a range of other agencies and colleagues including schools, Early Years settings, children’s centres, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, medical teams and the voluntary sector.

In partnership with De Montfort University Speech and Language Centre, we are supporting students to gain hands-on clinical experience during their placements by delivering the I CAN talk boost in early years settings. Find out more.

How Does Our Service Work?

Speech and language therapy services are delivered in a number of ways; if your child has been referred to us, you will receive a letter asking you to get in touch to arrange a first appointment at a venue near to where you live.

Children and young people needing input from our service may receive this support in a number of different ways, such as, individual therapy sessions, group work, visits to schools to give advice to those working with the child or young person and delivering training to others to increase their skills in this area.

Every year, the team receives nearly 3000 referrals and currently has approximately 8000 children and young people with identified needs on our caseloads.

We have 75 people working for the team in a variety of full and part-time roles; each speech and language therapist is registered with the Health Professions Council and is also a registered member of the professional body, the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapists.

The team works across a wide range of specialist areas such as specific language difficulties, cleft lip and palate, voice, learning disability, autism, stammering, signing and communication aids.

Our service is delivered from:

  • Health centres
  • Children’s centres
  • Mainstream and special schools
  • Specialist units and nurseries
  • Home visits
