Road to Recovery at Stewart House
A mini-gym at the mental health rehabilitation unit in Narborough
Patients at Stewart House have severe and enduring mental illnesses which impact on every aspect of their lives. Patients usually spend around 15 months at Stewart House, working with staff to help them with every aspect of their recovery. Physical activity can help us to feel healthier, feel more confident about how we look, feel successful when we set and achieve a goal and to feel better able to cope with stress and to sleep better.
These things are important for everyone but even more so to help someone recovering from mental illness. Patients have told us they want to exercise, but somewhere they feel safe and comfortable. We have identified a room for the gym which needs some alterations to make is a suitable place to exercise. Just a few key pieces of equipment will make a huge difference – a recumbent exercise bike, multi-gym, gym mats and resistance bands. Having an on-ward ‘mini gym’ area will go above and beyond core NHS provision to boost motivation, confidence and provide the chance to experience all the other awesome benefits of physical activity.

Dementia friendly gardens and activity shed
Evington Centre, advanced dementia care wards
Research by the King’s Fund found a 19% reduction in aggression and agitation when patients had access to a garden space. Your support will enable us to transform our unusable courtyard spaces into dementia friendly gardens on our wards at the Evington Centre. The gardens will be cleverly designed to encourage purposeful pottering and increase well-being through reminiscence.
