Valued Star Awards Logo

Our staff are our greatest asset, displaying hard work, commitment and passion on a daily basis. We want to create a culture where there are lots of opportunities to say “thank you” and an organisation that our staff are proud to be a part of.

What is Valued Star?

This monthly award is about recognising members of staff who have gone the extra mile in the way they demonstrate any or all of our Trust’s values of integrity, trust, compassion and respect. These run throughout Our Pledge, which we have signed up as staff, managers and as an organisation.

April's Winner

April’s Valued Star is Jane Southam, nurse on Ward 2 at Coalville Community Hospital. This is what happened when she received a surprise visit from chief executive Dr Peter Miller.

Jane was nominated for going above and beyond when she helped a member of the public who had collapsed from a heart attack. You can read the full story here.

Presenting Jane with her signed Valued Star certificate and badge, Pete said: “I am delighted to present you with this month's Valued Star award, thank you for everything you do.”

Nominating Jane, Linda Mellor said: “Jane is a caring and compassionate nurse who has worked at Coalville hospital for 30 years since it opened.

The reason i would like to nominate her is, recently whilst off duty , and whilst walking her dog, she came across a gentleman needing medical assistance, he had collapsed and it became clear to Jane that he needed her help, she was the first person on the scene and quickly started vital first aid / CPR assistance until help came in the form of other passing by nurses, who then helped to continue CPR until the ambulance arrived.

Her quick thinking and actions and the assistance of the other nurses made a big difference that day as they managed to save the gentleman's life.

Although she feels that she was just doing her job, i would like to put her forward for this award for the difference she makes every day to the patients, the staff and the ward just by being herself.”

Jane said: “I am gobsmacked - thank you."

How do the Valued Star Awards work?

One Valued Star is picked on a monthly basis from all those nominated during that month by our Executive Team. The winner is then announced the following month through a surprise presentation by Chief Executive Dr Peter Miller, who visits them in their place of work and presents a framed certificate.

The timeline for the awards and the dates for the monthly presentations is available.

It is important that if you are nominating someone for a Valued Star award, that you check they are available on the date of the scheduled presentation for that month.

Don't forget to let the person you're nominating know that you've nominated them - it is a great way to say thank you for all they do!

(Please copy and save the above text before you submit it as we are experiencing some technical problems with a number of the nomination submissions). Send a copy of the text by email to the person you are nominating, so that they know you are nominating them.

If you have any problems submitting your nomination, please complete a printable version of the form (see link above) and either scan and email to or send it in the internal post to the Communications team at Bridge Park Plaza,Thurmaston and they will add it manually.
