We are delighted that our new Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) has opened a new 15-bed inpatient facility on the Glenfield Hospital site in Leicester. ‘The Beacon’, an £8m purpose built facility, opened its doors to the first inpatients on 18 November 2020.
This video provides a virtual tour of the facility:
Back in June 209, our Trust chair, Cathy Ellis, marked the official start of construction by ‘cutting the first sod’ accompanied by clinical staff, service users and representatives from Interserve Construction Ltd:
Then in September 2019 we were delighted to welcome The Right Worshipful The Lord Mayor of Leicester, Councillor Annette Byrne, as well as local MPs Nicky Morgan and Liz Kendall, members of the Glenfield Parish Council, our construction partners and other stakeholders, to celebrate the completion of the building’s steel frame. This time, Cathy Ellis was pictured fixing the last bolt in position. The event was also an opportunity to announce the name for the new unit: ‘The Beacon’ was agreed in discussion with young people on our current inpatient ward, their families and staff. It reflects the unit’s position in Leicester and hope for a bright future.
We launched a fundraising appeal #BeaconAppeal, to enable us to purchase additional sensory and sporting equipment to enhance the care we provide on the unit. Young inpatients explained why this is so important:
An official opening event will be scheduled early in 2021. Find out more about the inpatient service here.
