Lymphoedema (non-cancer related)

The lymphoedema service at Leicestershire Partnership NHS trust is a clinic-based service offered to patients with non-cancer related lymphoedema. The service assess and plans individualised treatment to help patients manage their lymphoedema.

As a service we can offer:

  • Compression such as compression garments and multi layer bandaging
  • Decongestive therapies such as the use of pneumatic pump devices
  • Skin care
  • Lymphatic drainage-Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD) Simple lymphatic drainage (SLD)
  • Exercises
  • Patient advice/support/education

Our clinics run Monday to Friday excluding weekends and bank holidays.

Referral criteria

  • Patients registered with a Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland (LLR), Integrated Care Board (ICB), General Practice
  • Over the age of 18
  • Recorded clinical diagnosis of lymphoedema which has been present for longer than 3 months prior to referral, which is not related to a cancer diagnosis
  • Acute causes of swelling ruled out prior to referral. This includes cancer recurrence and DVT
  • BMI less than 40
  • Primary lymphoedema (swelling due to congenital lymphatic dysplasia)

Secondary lymphoedema because of:

  • Trauma (following completion of treatment)
  • Neurological conditions
  • Complex mid-line oedemas (cause must have been diagnosed prior to referral)
  • Upper limb lymphoedema (cause must have been diagnosed prior to referral)

Criteria exclusion

• Lipoedema. • Ulcerated/leaking legs/wounds. • Non-complex chronic oedema including requests for provision of compression hosiery following compression bandaging by community nurses. • Referrals for Secondary lymphoedema because of Cancer or treatments for cancer. • Patients with a BMI of 40 and over.

Referrals can be made by SystmOne and EMIS users via PRISM e-referrals.

Users who cannot access these systems should request an email referral form from llrlymphoedema.noncancer@nhs.net.
