Service description
The AAAS is an NHS service for adults (18+) in Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland who suspect they may be autistic but don’t yet have a diagnosis. The process involves questionnaires, developmental history, and interviews with both the individual and someone who knows them well (an “informant”).
A referral is needed from a GP or healthcare professional, who will provide two forms to be completed: the ASRS-18 (for ADHD screening) and the PPBS (completed by someone who has known you ideally since childhood, or for a very long time).
If your referral suggests autism is possible, you’ll be invited to a first assessment (usually within 16 weeks), often over video call. You may be discharged after this or it may lead to a full assessment (within 4–6 months), followed by a feedback appointment (within 3 months). Following the full assessment, you’ll receive a report and support information.
The assessment can be emotionally challenging, so support is available – text ChatAutism (07312 277097), ChatMentalHealth (07480 635199) or click here to visit the Autism Space website.
