Overview

Service description

The Young Onset Dementia Assessment Service (YODAS) assesses working age adults for dementia. While it is fairly common for people over the age of 65 to have a form of dementia, it is very rare for people younger than this to develop a dementia.
We review people with memory problems and word-finding issues which may indicate an emerging dementia.

Our team completes “cognitive” assessments, where we will ask questions and sometimes ask you to write or draw things. We may also send you for further tests, such as head scans, blood tests, or other tests as required.

We operate as an outpatient clinic, and you will be asked to attend appointments at the hospital.

Because Young Onset Dementia (YOD) is very rare, it can take a lot of tests before we can provide a diagnosis. We’ll look to rule out other conditions, such as long-Covid, menopause, or andropause, and may suggest lifestyle changes and holistic treatments to improve your overall health as part of our testing and treatment.

Referral criteria

We do not currently accept self-referrals. Please discuss any concerns with your memory or word-finding with your GP, who can refer to us if they cannot find another cause for your problems.

Referrals can be received from

Registered professionals within Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland - including GPs, consultants, and other health professionals.
