A registered nurse working for Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust (LPT) has received the international DAISY Award for providing “exceptional care” for her patient and ensuring “his wishes were heard”.

The DAISY Awards are an international recognition programme that honours and celebrates the exceptional care that many nurses and midwives provide every day.

Magdalena Sromecka, a registered nurse based in Loughborough, was nominated for the prestigious award by her patient’s daughter. The nomination reads:

“My dad was a patient on Swithland ward. From the moment dad was admitted, Magda was a ray of sunshine. She took exceptional care of my dad, but also us as a family.

“Nothing was ever too much; she was extremely well-informed regarding dad’s care and the plan. She supported dad with kindness, compassion and dignity. She advocated rigorously for him, and ensured his wishes were heard.

“She cared for us as a family. When things got too much, or we were distressed due to the strain of dad’s condition – she was there with a hug, or a kind word or telling us we could do this. She is motivational and her drive for exceptional care is contagious.

“I wish I could replicate Magda and have a Magda everywhere as the world definitely needs more Magda’s looking after them and their relatives.”

Magdalena shared: “I feel honoured, validated and inspired to continue providing high-quality care. [Receiving the] DAISY Award definitely boosts my morale and self-esteem. It is such an honour to receive this award.”

“I love talking to my patients and their relatives. I feel deep personal satisfaction. I love the endless variety and growth; no two days are the same. I love to be a source of knowledge for my patients and families and comfort for them.”

Magdalena received her award from Linda Chibuzor, Group chief nurse, and Jane Martin, assistant director for nursing and quality at LPT, accompanied by her colleagues and her nominator.
