Diana Childrens Community Service - Training
The Diana Children’s Community Service is a multidisciplinary team that provides care and support to families of children/young people with life-limiting/life threatening conditions. Within this service we provide training and assessments to healthcare and non-health professionals working with children/young people to carry out ‘health care tasks’.
The training is provided by registered children’s nurses who have experience in working with children/young people and their families.
An annual training programme aims to provide a basic understanding of health care tasks to enable health care and non-health care staff/carers to safely carry out tasks with children/young people. Our training programme is not provided on an emergency or short notice basis, but regular monthly training sessions are available throughout the year.
The sessions aim to provide a basic understanding of the most common health care tasks. Courses offered include:
- Epilepsy awareness
- Enteral feeding (gastrostomy and nasogastric feeding)
- Respiratory care (oral suction, inhalers, nebulisers and oxygen)
- Tracheostomy care
- Mechanical ventilation
- Oxygen saturation monitoring
Each course provides: a theory session; the opportunity to practice with any equipment required for the task under supervision and an introduction to the competency workbooks.
Each participant will then have to complete the following in their work/home environment: completion of self-directed learning in competency workbook to facilitate own learning needs;
Practical assessment (pre-arranged by trainee); Signing of competence by a registered nurse following successful completion of the above.
The training is provided for general awareness or as a competency for an individual child.
The training is valid for one year from the theoretical session and must be updated. This is you and your manager’s responsibility, you must arrange for your update to be completed within the year.
The training sessions are £65 per person, per session. For statutory organisations there is no charge for the training.
