Frail Older Person's Advice and Liaison Service (FOPALS)

FOPALS provides a service at all three acute hospital sites in Leicester but has an office located at Leicester Royal Infirmary. Staffed by mental health nurses, psychiatrists and geriatricians to provide mental health assessment and advice for patients over 65 years of age (or patients under the age of 65 with a known diagnosis of dementia) who are occupying an acute hospital bed.

Collaborative service run by Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust and University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust.

Referral criteria

Those in the following categories occupying an acute bed:

  • patients of all ages with probable dementia where their mental health problems is associated with risks that will complicate their treatment in hospital and/or their discharge planning
  • patients aged over 65 years who would benefit from a mental health assessment.
