Adult Speech and Language Therapy Service

Our Speech and Language Therapy Service for adults is provided across the community and hospitals of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland.

The service provides a specialist, effective and efficient comprehensive service which includes assessment, diagnosis, intervention, management and advice for adults with primarily acquired disorders of speech/language/communication and/or swallowing.

Referral criteria

– Dysarthria (speech disorder)

– Aphasia (language disorder)

– Dysphonia/aphonia ( voice disorder) 

– Dysfluency (fluency disorder/stammer)

– Dysphagia (swallowing difficulties).

We can also offer management for chronic cough and vocal cord dysfunction (these referrals are only accepted from Respiratory Medicine or ENT).

There are many reasons someone may develop a difficulty with communication and/or swallowing, these can include:

– Stroke

– Brain injury / head injury

– Brain tumour

– Progressive neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s Disease, Progressive Supranuclear Palsy, Multi System Atrophy, Multiple Sclerosis, Motor Neurone Disease resulting in motor speech disorders and/or dysphagia

– Voice disorders (these require an ENT assessment prior to SLT involvement to establish the cause)

– Respiratory difficulties

– Head and neck cancer

– Acquired brain injury

– Disorders of fluency (eg. stammer/stutter)

– Dementia

– Palliative care needs particularly for degenerative disorders and cancers.

Referral forms are avaliable on SystmOne, PRISM or on paper and can be emailed to adultspeech@leicspart.nhs.uk or posted to: Adult Speech and Language Therapy Service, Prince Philip House, Malabar Road, Leicester, LE1 2NZ.

Criteria exclusion

- People with a learning disability unless they present with an acquired disorder secondary to their learning disability, for example: stroke. (Adults on the learning disability register should be referred to the Learning Disability Referral Management Team, 138 Winstanley Drive, Leicester. LE3 1PB Tel: 0116 295 4528/29 ); - Adults with Mental Health conditions who have specialist SLT needs outside of the skills and expertise of the service. Examples of exclusion may include: psychosis, elective difficulties (e.g. elective mutism, swallowing phobias); - Children under 18 years. (We may see young people over 16 if they are not in statutory education and Adult SLT service is most appropriate provider of intervention); - People with communication difficulties as a result of hearing impairment, learning or developmental difficulties such as: mild speech impediment (e.g. a lisp), autism, developmental dyslexia; - People with difficulties swallowing medication only (ie no problems with eating and/or drinking).

To access our service you can speak to your GP or consultant who can make a referral.
