Linnaeus Nursery

Linnaeus Nursery is a day service that provides various activities as a means of therapy. The service operates as a semi-commercial garden centre and is open to the general public for plant sales.

Individuals can attend to develop self- confidence, improve weekly routine, develop a new role, increase responsibilities, socially interact with others and to practice work related skills in a supportive environment. Activities available can include specific gardening tasks, general site upkeep, simple woodwork, occasional craft and customer service during the Spring and Summer. Once an initial referral has been completed there is a maximum waiting time of four weeks until a patient can have their first contact with the service. The first contact is an opportunity for the patient to look round Linnaeus Nursery to make an informed decision about whether they would like to attend and therefore proceed with the referral process. Once a referral has been accepted, waiting times to commence the service induction may vary depending upon the availability of current vacancies. Linnaeus staff will advise how long an individual is expected to wait until they can be inducted into the service.

Referral criteria

In order to be able to attend, individuals must be 18 years or over and have a consultant psychiatrist within an adult mental health service, older persons community mental health team or learning disability service within Leicestershire Partnership NHS Trust. Individuals who wish to attend must have needs which the service is able to support.

Criteria exclusion

None

How to access this service

Referrers need to contact Linnaeus Nursery on 0116 225 5828 and speak to any member of staff. You will be asked to complete a short criteria screening tool over the telephone, which will act as an initial referral. Once the form has been completed the member of staff will be able to advise if the individual meets the referral criteria and can arrange a date for the individual to visit the service. The referrer may accompany the individual during the visit. If the individual decides that they would like to attend the service they will be given referral documentation to complete with the support of the referrer. Once the service is in receipt of the completed documentation, the referral will be processed and a decision made within two weeks. The service will write to the individual providing a start date or a proposed waiting time. If the referral cannot be accepted, the service will contact the referrer and individual with an explanation and alternative services may be suggested where appropriate.
